Pistols from Canada

One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble
Not much between despair and ecstasy

One night in Bangkok and the tough guys tumble

Can't be too careful with your company

--One Night in Bangkok, Murray Head

________

Para Ordnance, a Canadian arms manufacturer based in Toronto, ran this ad in the latest issue of Dillon Precision's Blue Press catalog. In the ad, a Minuteman's image is superimposed over the Second Amendment, with the words security/people/bear arms/shall not be infringed highlighted in red. The contact address is in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

The Database of Small Arms Production and Transfers say
Para Ordnance, in addition to supplying Canadian police forces and private sports shooters and hunters,

ships handguns out of the country, reporting export sales exceeding C$500,000 in 1998. In 1996, Para-Ordnance received an export permit to sell about 200 handguns worth just over C$100,000 to police in Thailand, according to media reports. The company also claims "export experience" in over 20 countries, including South Africa, Philippines, Argentina, Chile, Venezuela, and all states in the United States.

A quick internet search didn't turn up any newer sales data, but the latest chart (1999) showed a dramatic upward trend in handgun sales abroad, beginning in 1996, for Para Arms.

Why don't they pitch their goods in Canada?

Why don't they pitch their goods in Canada? Because most Canadians have zero interest in handguns. Rifles and shotguns can be darned useful when looking for supper for the children or fending off a pesky bear, but handguns are only useful against other humans. Canadians lack any motivation to arm themselves against each other, being largely polite and civilized folks. Others might consider following their example.

kootenay,

Ah. . .I knew it was something about them Canooks.

"Motivation" is what they lack. Without it, they shall never ascend the totem pole of misanthropy, for which our own Reps. are the standard-bearers.
