The Next Step

How do you solve a problem like Maria?
How do you catch a cloud and pin it down?

--Maria, Rogers and Hammerstein

______________

It is all fine and well that we close the Gitmo detainee facility, but what do you do with truly dangerous men like Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (KSM)?

KSM can never be prosecuted in Federal court because his treatment following capture would outrage the court and the world. Therefore, he will never be legally convicted.

To boot, he is not a prisoner of war, so what to with him?

Option I: Send him back to Pakistan for legal resolution.

Option II: Release him. And do it right the next time.

Option III: Shoot him when he is trying to escape.

Option IV: Drown him for real.

Option V: Hire him as a Central Intelligence Agency consultant (assuming he is not already on the books.)

These are just options, but it is not in our democratic tradition to keep him locked up indefinitely without charges or a fair and transparent trial. Ranger sees no option but to release him or turn him over to Pakistan. Even the Pakistan card is a weak one.

And since there was no conviction, let's get the reward money back, too.

Please lets Renegotiate his pay because he's no longer scary. It's alway bothered me that this group would pop up when every king g needed them. The sad thing is they and the home growns are standing in the wings to harm all of us on the little blue sphere hurling through space.

Option VI
Get him a half hour program on Fox.

I find it extremley offensive that they present these individuals as such a threat to ME ! Hell, turn him loose and watch him. That would probably be more effective than all the waterboarding info you got from him!

Ah, the politics of fear is still alive!

My opinion, as unpopular as it is with my circle of friends is this:
Try him.
Allow all his treatment as admissible to the court.
If he still convicted, life without parole.
If his treatment is outrageous (and considering what I've been reading, it was.) and they throw the case out, let him go with a fat compensation check thats enough to buy himself a nice room with a view, but not enough to get into trouble with.

Trust me...someone like him...will be forever watched.
And also, someone like him has enemies who are not bound by social courtesy, or burdened by national laws to exact their revenge.
He is no longer a problem, regardless, for me, the only problem he presents is the continuation of his incarceration. He is a monument to the Bush legacy and I for one want all monuments of Bush's era removed from my memory.

you gotta big ol' ooo-rah from me sheerahkahn.

that's right. national security my ass. the reason they are so intent on hiding what was done, by whom, on the orders from... is that they don't want to say what they did to these people.

waterboarding? it went much, much further. with ksm, they had his young children in custody and threatened to torture and maim them. i don't care what you think you're doing. that's reprehensible, vile, and wrong. it needs to be addressed.

try them. in civilian courts. with standard rules of evidence. allow the defense to put those torturing sadists on the fucking stand under oath.

let what's left of the system try to work.

the UN special commission on torture and the world court of the hague have already told obama that if he refuses to act, or hesitates too long, then they will act.

bush/cheney et al, can expect the full milosevich and pinochet treatment.

I'm with Sheerah and MB. The only way to let the poisons out of our government is to open the doors to the secret prisons and let the sun of open and public trial in.

And if the torturers spend hours on the stand repeating "On the advice of my counsel...I refuse to answer the question." like some fucking low-life, sleazy bastard Mafia gunsel...

Well, let them.
